ReUse Market Reopening Protocols

Although many of you have asked when we will be open, our space and limited ventilation mean there will be limitations on how many people can enter The Market at any given time.
Please note, we ARE NOT ACCEPTING MATERIAL DONATIONS at this time. We will update Facebook and our website as we work through new procedures for handling incoming materials.
In the meantime, we are resuming our regular, noon to 5 p.m hours, on Thursday through Saturday each week, and have implemented the following protocols to facilitate the safety of you, our valued customers, as well as our cherished all-volunteer staff.
Please review the Reopening Protocols prior to visiting ReUse Market and we hope to see you soon!

ReUse Market Reopening Protocols

Based on the “Idaho guidelines for reopening after COVID”

  • A maximum of ten (10) people, including staff, will be allowed in ReUse Market at any time. Please respect the instructions of our volunteers if you are asked to wait downstairs — we apologize in advance for this inconvenience.

  • Please do not visit The Market if you have a fever or are exhibiting any symptoms of illness, or if you have knowingly been exposed to Covid-19 in the past 10 days.

  • All people over the age of 5 must wear a non-ventilated facemask, covering their nose and mouth at all times in The Market, including volunteer staff and customers. Disposable masks are available if you do not have one. Anyone refusing to wear an approved face covering will kindly be asked to leave, without exception.

  • Please also practice 6’ social distancing while shopping in The Market and wait at marked locations for checkout.

  • We can only check out one customer at a time so please be patient with our volunteers and expect a wait.

  • The checkout counter and bins for weighing items, as well as shopping baskets, will be cleaned after each customer. The stair railing will also be cleaned throughout the day when we are open.

  • Hand sanitizer will be available for customers to use upon arrival, as well as throughout The Market to use as needed.

  • Until we are able to relax restrictions on the number of people shopping at a given time, we ask that you shop alone to allow adequate distance between shoppers in our already crowded Market. Please note, children count toward the total number of shoppers and must remain with their adult while shopping.

  • We will soon begin taking credit cards in order to minimize touch transactions but checks and cash are still welcome in the meantime.

  • Material donations are not being accepted at this time. NO EXCEPTIONS. Please remember it is a violation of Idaho Statute 18-7031 to dump materials without permission.

  • When we resume collecting donated materials we will have a specific day of the week we are open for donations only (no shopping) and appointments may be required. Please check our website for the most up-to-date information about materials donation.

Artist Spotlight – Underground UP Zine

LucianIMGP2669

The Underground UP project includes a mix of juniors and sophomores that go to One Stone High School, and  Boise High School. The students presenting their work at the ReUse Markert include: is Ari Borzea, Indigo Blauch-Chappell, Kate Stutzmann, Liam Neupert, and Lucian Davis.

Of their zine project, ‘The Underground Up,’ they say:

We are a group of passionate and creative teens that meet weekly to create art. Our intent is to reach youth through creative opportunities. In a world of turmoil and conflicting views, a group of passionate teens has developed a radical idea. We are designing a zine project (a zine is a “noncommercial, nonprofessional, small-circulation magazine where the creators produce, publish, and distribute themselves.”) Our intention is to address relevant and controversial topics that strike a chord in our hearts and inspire us to instigate change. Our hope is to elevate issues that youth are concerned about through the publishing of a zine that would be comprised of art and writing sourced from teens in Boise. This creation will be transformative because it will give voice and representation to the views and expressions of an often overlooked demographic of creatives and thinkers.

As of right now, we have five topics for five different zine publications that include gun violence, climate change, gender equality, raising kids, and body representation. Each of these topics have been carefully considered under an umbrella question which is: “What Needs to Change?” We want to open this project to more teens around Boise in the creation of these zines. Our intention is to release one zine every two months and beyond their distribution, include screen printed t-shirts that depict the front cover of the zine.

Market Spotlight – Volunteer Judy Wojcicki

The ReUse Market is an entirely volunteer-run organization — it is our volunteers that make it possible for us to continue to keep high quality arts and craft supplies out of the landfill and available to our local artists, teachers, parents, and makers of all sorts, at an affordable price.

Judy Wojcicki has been a volunteer with ReUse Market since we moved to Garden City. Learn about Judy’s journey and what keeps her dedicated to creative reuse.

How long have you been volunteering with ReUse Market?

I’ve been devoting my time as a ReUse Market volunteer for the past 2 ½ years. However, I’ve supported the Market far longer as a loyal customer. As a teacher, I was delighted to be able to acquire interesting and affordable materials for the classroom—all in keeping with a strong personal and classroom commitment to the Market’s mission of keeping art/craft materials out of the landfill and putting them back into the hands of artists (in this case, into the hands of young, talented and aspiring artists). There was never a doubt in my mind that upon retirement I would “give back” to an organization that gave me so very much. I enjoy contributing time and energy as well as the donation of materials.

Why do you enjoy volunteering at ReUse Market?

The most gratifying aspect of my volunteer work has been the opportunity to meet talented artists and crafters. They are a constant source of inspiration. Seeing and spending time with “repeat customers” is like spending time with family and brings a strong sense of community to the overall mission of the Market.

What has been your favorite or most unusual find with ReUse Market?

From the first day I arrived as a volunteer, I greatly admired a beautiful book press. Book art is an area of interest I had hoped to pursue in retirement. Months passed as I admired this incredible donation—reluctant to make the purchase because of my lack of practical experience in the field of book art (as though I had not yet earned the right to make the purchase). Because of my hesitation, I lost out on the purchase. However, my pure joy came when I personally sold the press to a talented, local book artist. My joy came in meeting the artist and knowing that it had found its way to a perfect home.

What kind of crafting do you enjoy doing?

I have always been a “Jack of All Trades-Master of None.”  I’m a “life long learner” who enjoys discovering and experimenting with all sorts of artistic media and creative ideas. Our customers and volunteer colleagues help further my retirement interests with their willingness to share their expertise and words of encouragement. I enjoy sharing artistic ideas and projects with youth and adult audiences and am always excited about the opportunities we have as an organization to offer art and craft experiences in a variety of different venues and in collaboration with other community partners.

What from the market inspires you?
The inspiration I find from the market is the hunt of the perfect object and or materials for my next project. I mainly use only repurposed items in my art. I have been aware of the reuse market from the beginning, I became friends with Gina Lauer and even tried to help her find a location in the early days.

What is your favorite media do you use in your work?

Everything!  I loved mixed media. I have always had an interest in recycling, reusing and repurposing especially as related to art.

I have collected small cool stuff all my life and have worked with a wide range of art media as a former art teacher and now incorporate those items and skills into my current body of work aptly named ” Every Little Thing.”

Each found object assemblage contains multiple cast off items that no longer have an intrinsic value in and of themselves but after careful manipulation and juxtaposition of objects along with added details in a variety of media…someone else’s cast off junk is transformed into a piece of art to be enjoyed by the next generation.

When/how did you develop your style?

My undergraduate degree was in painting. I taught elementary art for 25 years. Received my MA in Art and Museum Education in 2004 were I studied the Post Modern art movement which also influenced my own personal art making. During this time I starting using collage ephemera and even put 3D elements into my paintings and then about 10 years ago after retiring I starting using up all of my personal collections into my art. Further Inspired by 1960′s Joseph Cornell’s boxes, the 1600′s Cabinet of Curiosities, and current mixed media artist Michael DeMeng.

I have had 2 Boise Weekly covers, and 2 traffic boxes ( one in Boise and one in Ketchum) based on my found object art. I am a member of Swell Artist Collective, Boise Open Studios (BOSCO), Treasure Valley Artist Alliance and a docent at the Boise Art Museum. My art can be found at many pop up venues around town and on my website: http://boiseartist.wixsite.com/pammcknight
